Chirano Gold Mines Limited (CGML) has inaugurated two school blocks for pupils of the Etwebo and Akoti in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai and Sefwi Wiawso District Assembly  in the Western Region.

A third school block is currently under construction for the pupils of Paboaso, another community in the area.
Each school block has six classrooms, offices and store room, all of which are meant for primary education.

The Etwebo school was financed from the company’s community budget and the two schools at Akoti. The two schools at Paboase were financed by the CGML Trust Endowment Fund for community projects.

The General Manager of CGML, Mr John Seaward, inaugurated the buildings at a ceremony at the twin communities of Etwebo and Akoti.

He said his outfit was proud of financing the projects, and noted that the projects were valuable in assisting the government to provide education as a way of improving the social well-being of the population.

Mr Seaward noted that education was vital in the fight against poverty and in enhancing the living standards of the population.

The General Manager said, to enhance educational development in the area, the mine, last year, initiated the projects and decided to finance them from the company’s community budget and the trust fund.

He said the endowment fund, had up to date yielded about US$423,000 out of which  US$278,000 had been spent on numerous community projects.

“This year, we anticipate the fund will increase by over US$250,000 as a result of the US$80 million investment in the mine expansion programme which has been completed,” he said.

Mr Seaward said other development projects were being funded in the communities, and that to date, a total of GH¢1.67 million had been spent on various projects from the mine’s annual operating budget. The projects cover health, sanitation and services.

Earlier in her address, Mrs Afiba Dadzie, the Western Regional Director of Education, commended the company  for what she described as its humane gesture.

She said, the gesture was in tune with the Ghana Education Service’s vision for communities to provide buildings, to help increase access to education for children of school age.

The chiefs of Etwebo and Akoti, Nana Yaw Gyam II and Nana Oppong II, expressed gratitude to the mining company for what they had done for the community.

They applauded the mining company for bringing development to the area by upgrading the roads of Akoti, Etwebo, Sorano A and Paboase, as well as providing drainage and culverts and electricity for the area.
